Provo Whines about BRT

UTA is working with Utah Valley officials to determine the route of the Bus Rapid Transit that they are setting up down there. Unfortunately... they aren't willing to be flexible with Provo, and you can see why. (Story here).

Provo wants things rerouted, so that the BYU students go south, to their mall instead of North, to Orem's.

But let's be honest... University Mall is far superior.

So screw you, Provo! Stop your selfish whining! It makes sense for BRT to run down University Ave, and it doesn't make sense for it to run all the way to your crummy mall that gets all the freeway traffic anyway. And if you really want the money channeled the way you want it, YOU pay the $100K+ they would need to redraw a route and refile an environmental impact study.

  3. I think the mall is a consideration, but I think actually the bigger issue most of the leaders were talking about was routing to the hospital.

My concern is that a BRT system by its very nature can't stop at every major location in the city.

Most of the leaders at this meeting were "Johnny Come Latelies." This isn't a new proposal here.

  4. At least one of the leaders isn't even elected yet, he's just trying to win points with the constituency, and this is a good way to "prove" himself, with no actual change made.

BRT should cover the main routes and the primary corridors. Anything else and it will be ignored, but if you can just hop on one of these, it would make a difference.

And besides... it isn't like there aren't buses down there, and I pretty much guarantee at least one of them goes by the hospital. They would just have to get to a transfer point. Or walk... 5 block by 3 blocks sounds like a lot, but it is really only a mile (at most).
